Fault Code Report

View fault codes reported by equipment with supported BUS-connected devices. Used for diagnostics, troubleshooting, and lamp status alerts.

Introduction:

The Fault Code Report displays fault codes received from equipment that is connected to the J1939 port using a supported GPS device. This report helps identify engine, transmission, and system faults — along with associated lamp status indicators and detailed source identifiers.

By default, the report returns all fault codes from the past 24 hours and loads blank until filters are selected.

Go to: Fleet > Maintenance > Fault Code Report


📌 Use This Report To:

  • Review all fault codes for supported equipment

  • Filter fault activity by equipment, protocol, VIN, or code

  • See first and last fault occurrences, cleared dates, and fault frequency

  • View lamp warnings like MIL, Red Stop, Amber Warning, and Protect Lamp

  • Map fault code locations for diagnostics or service review

🧾 Step-by-step Instructions

  1. In the Equipment dropdown, select a supported machine — or leave as “All”

  2. Choose a Protocol (e.g., J1939 or J1708)

  3. Filter by VIN # (optional)

    • Check Valid VINs Only to remove unsupported entries

  4. Select a Fault Code:

    • All: all available fault codes

    • Any Fault Code: only fault codes with triggered lamp statuses

    • Malfunction Indicator Lamp:

    • Red Stop Lamp:

    • Amber Warning Lamp Status:

    • Protect Lamp:

  5. Enter a Start Date and End Date

    • Required for generating the report

    • Defaults to the past 24 hours if left unchanged

  6. Click Generate Report


📋 Table Columns & Definitions

After generating, the report displays a single table with sortable columns.

Hover over any column header to view its full name or definition.

  • Click on the arrow [ > ] on the left to display the fault occurrences.

  • Asset Name – The name of the equipment

  • Fault: First Occurrence – Timestamp of first detected fault

  • Fault: Last Occurrence – Most recent instance of this fault

  • Fault: Cleared Date – When the fault was resolved or cleared

  • Fault Count – Number of times the fault occurred since last cleared

  • Manufacturer – Equipment manufacturer

  • Make – Equipment make (e.g., Kenworth, Ford)

  • VIN – Vehicle Identification Number

  • Year – Year of manufacture

  • Driver – Assigned operator, if applicable

  • Project – Current or last known assigned project

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) – Check engine light

  • Red Stop Lamp (RSL) – Indicates engine should be stopped

  • Amber Warning Lamp Status (AWL) – Non-critical warning

  • Protect Lamp (PL) – Triggered by fluid, pressure, or system issues

  • Source Address (SA) – Which system reported the fault (e.g., engine, transmission)

  • Message Identification (MID) – Component or system generating the fault

  • Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) – Data point that triggered the error

  • Fault Mode Indicator (FMI) – Type of fault (e.g., voltage out of range, incorrect rate)

  • Parameter Identifier (PID) – J1708-specific metric identifier

  • Subsystem Identifier (SID) – Subcomponent code within a MID

  • Occurrence Count (OC) – How many times the fault condition has occurred

  • Description – Interpreted SPN/FMI fault description

  • Protocol – J1939 or J1708 cable type

  • Address – Reverse-geocoded location where the fault occurred

  • Map – Click to view a location map for the fault


💡 Understanding Fault Code Components

Fault codes are typically shown as a Source Address / SPN / FMI string, like 11/1049/3:

  • SA 11 – Brakes controller (ABS)

  • SPN 1049 – Brake Pressure Sensing Axle 1

  • FMI 3 – Voltage above normal or shorted to high source

This breakdown helps when fault descriptions are too vague or multiple codes appear similar.

Fault codes are only available for supported devices such as GS-305, GS-340, GS-364e, and GS-364 connected to the J1939 port.
