Installation Instructions for the GS-283 Hardwired Device

Updated over 2 months ago

Overview

This article provides installation instructions for the GS-283 hardwired tracking device. It includes required tools, wiring details, testing steps, and optional advanced connections.

Who this guide is for:

Installers, mechanics, and administrators performing first-time installs or replacements on powered equipment.

Required Tools and Materials

Suggested Tools

  • Wire Strippers

  • Crimpers

  • Multimeter

  • Drill or Impact Driver

  • Socket Set

Recommended Hardware

  • Self-Tapping Screws

  • Zip Ties

  • Electrical Tape

  • Ring Terminals

  • Butt Connectors

  • Solder (optional)

  • Grommet

  • Wire Loom

Step-by-Step Installation

1 Preparation and Initial Setup

Before beginning the installation:

  • Gather all necessary tools and materials listed above.

  • Use a multimeter to locate the appropriate electrical connection points. Identify:

    • Engine Running Wire (White): 12 V/24 V only when the engine is running; reads 0 V when off.

    • Constant Power Wire (Red): Maintains 12 V/24 V regardless of engine state.

    • Chassis Ground (Black): Connect to alternator housing or a known good chassis ground.

    • (Do not connect to the battery or battery side of the master switch!)

Tip: Select connection points that are located close to each other to simplify wiring and reduce the chance of harness interference.

2 Device Mounting

  • The GS-283 is IP67-rated (waterproof and dustproof).

  • Mount on the top or side of the equipment.

  • The device can transmit through plastic, fiberglass, rubber, or other non-metallic materials.

  • The device CANNOT transmit through metal.

3 Routing the Harness

  • Plan routing to avoid hot surfaces (e.g., exhaust) and moving parts.

  • Use existing harness routes when possible.

  • Secure with zip ties for protection and clean routing.

4 Harness Installation

  • Drill a hole large enough to pass the harness through.

  • Insert a grommet to protect the wiring.

  • Remove fuse links temporarily to pass the harness through.

  • Route along the frame or existing wiring paths; secure with zip ties.

  • Once routed:

    • Reattach fuse links using butt connectors or solder + tape.

    • Attach ring terminals to red, white, and black wire ends.

5 Electrical Connections

  • Turn off the master switch before wiring.

  • Disconnect terminals at the alternator.

  • Connect and bolt down:

    • Red – Constant power

    • White – Engine running

    • Black – Ground

6 Device Activation and Testing

  • Turn the master switch on.

  • Start the equipment and allow 5–10 minutes for initialization and updates.

  • Check LED indicators:

    • Solid Green – Power and GPS fix

    • Solid Amber – Cellular/data connection

  • Open the mobile app and use Verify GPS Device to confirm the device reports “engine running.”

    • (See the Verify GPS Device article for detailed steps.)

  • Confirm recurring transmissions at intervals of 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes depending on the configured settings.

  • Shut off the equipment and verify that the device sends an “engine stopped” report.

  • Record:

    • Odometer / Hour meter reading

    • Equipment type and model

  • Pair (couple) the device with the equipment using the mobile app. From the home screen, tap Devices > Field Service Ticket.

    • (See the Field Service Ticket article for detailed steps.)

7 Final Steps and Cleanup

  • Bundle and tape red, white, and black wires together.

  • Cover with wire loom for protection.

  • Leave slight slack to prevent vibration damage.

  • Avoid securing to removable components.

Installation Complete

Your GS-283 is now fully installed, tested, and ready for operation. Double-check all connections and wire protection.

Optional Wiring Features

Starter Disable (Solid Green Wire)

  • Connect to a starter disable relay to prevent engine start during restricted times or zones.

  • Interrupts the starter circuit when activated.

Ignition Sense for Schedule Buffering (Orange Wire)

  • Recommended when using starter disable.

  • Detects key-on signal to provide buffer time for validation.

PTO or Safety Lever Monitoring (Solid Blue Wire)

  • Connect to a PTO switch or safety lever.

  • Enables production tracking, safety compliance, or usage analytics.

Note: Optional wiring should be done by a qualified technician using the equipment’s wiring diagram. Ensure all additional connections are fused and protected.

FAQs Fin Can Answer

Q: Which wire provides engine running voltage?

→ The white wire provides 12 V/24 V only when the engine is running.

Q: Where should the ground wire connect?

→ To the chassis or alternator housing — not directly to the battery.

Q: What do the LEDs mean?

→ Solid Green = GPS fix; Solid Amber = Cellular connection.

Q: How do I confirm the installation worked?

→ Open the mobile app and use Verify GPS Device to check that the device reports “engine running.”

Q: How do I pair the device after installation?

→ Open the mobile app and go to Devices > Field Service Ticket.(See the Field Service Ticket article for details.)

Q: Can I install optional features myself?

→ Only if you’re qualified and using the correct wiring diagram.
