Introduction
The Mainline Paving Calculator, is designed for mainline paving shifts with a paver set as the destination. This feature allows paving shift managers and foremen to track and ensure that the mat is being laid down correctly and within specifications, including the correct width, weight, and depth. The Mainline Paving Calculator feature provides real-time calculations of the mat's yield based on current paving conditions, allowing you to make necessary adjustments on the fly to ensure optimal efficiency and quality. Definition:
Yield: How much Mat is laid to cover the road/ground surface. A given length and width of road can be paved with (X tons) of asphalt based on how thick the asphalt is laid.
Mainline Paving: Mainline paving jobs (shifts) are those where paving runs in one direction on a freeway or road with no abrupt changes in direction. In contrast to this are jobs like neighborhoods, city streets, and parking lots where paving is discontinuous and often for only short distances between turns and/or breaks. Mainline paving is also typically characterized by consistent widths for many miles and often for many days of paving.
IMPORTANT:
Mainline Paving Calculator Calculations are not returned at the beginning of the shift. The calculation requires at least 5 dumps to determine the yield trend with all trucks being tracked.
Also, the Mainline Paving Calculator uses the Equipment Type and Manufacturer Model to determine if the destination is indeed a paver. If the Equipment Type assigned to the paver doesn’t include Paver and the Model is TBD, the shift will not provide Mainline Paving Calculator data. Make sure the paver equipment’s type and model are set correctly.
Mainline Paving Calculator KPI Color Coding:
Green: 95.1% to 104.9%
Yellow: Below between 95%-91.1% and above between 105%-109.9%
Red: 90% and below & 110% and above
Shift Cards Indicate if Mainline Paving Calculator Settings Are Using Defaults or Not.
The Today’s Shift and Completed Shift cards indicate the Mainline Paving Calculator settings for Paver Width (ft.) and Target Depth (in.) for the shift are using the default value or were updated specifically for the shift.
The default value(s) may be correct (red doesn’t always indicate a problem) and applicable, but this new visual indicator will inform users of the settings and highlight instances when they may need to be updated.

Mainline Paving Calculator: Users can Enable or Disable the Mainline Paving Calculator on each shift.

Additional Information will provide more accuracy.
Paving Start/End Time: [Enter the time paving started/stopped] This will exclude time at the beginning of the shift before paving started from Mainline Paving Calculator calculations to improve accuracy.
This will default to the shift start time. [Key for calculation]
Target Distance (ft): Enter expected distance during shift. [Example: 10000ft]
The relationship between the paving distance target set and the sq. yds. KPI. If you don't set a paving distance (feet) it can't set a sg yds target. The Mainline Paving Calculator uses the paving distance and the paving width to calculate the sg yds target.
Target Tonnage: Same as Estimated Tons
Hopper Average Capacity % After Dump: 75 [default is 75%]
Mainline Paving Calculator
Material Type: Pulls from the Material Type free form field on the shift.
Weight: 1 square yard of asphalt, 1-inch-thick weights (for example) 110 lbs. That’s a “square yard inch” often written “sy-in”
Target Tons: Or Estimated tons
Target Length (FT): Target paving distance for the shift (Feet.)
Paving Width (ft): Width of the paver. (Feet) 10/12ft
Target Depth (in): Target Thickness of the material on the mat. (inches)
Target Square Yards: Target Length * Target Width = Target Square Yards
Tons Laid: Total number of dumped tickets based on project number.
Depth (in.): Depth of material laid so far based on tonnage dumped, weight (sy-in), length (calculated paving travel distance), and width.
Tons In Route: Tonnage en route to the paver based on scale ticket date.

Tons Remaining: Tons Laid + En Route - Target Tons = Tons Remaining. (Is Target Length involved in this calc at all? If not - Target/Estimated Tons - (Tons laid + Tons en Route) = Tons Remaining - Other way around (above) and the number will be incorrectly negative. It can be correctly negative though if the Estimated Tons was set too low)
The last section provides the customer with details on expected outcomes with current data. This information will change with each scale ticket tonnage.

Estimated Asphalt in the Mat: The estimated tonnage of what has been paved Asphalt Loaded on the Way: Scale tickets issued with project number.
Tons in Paver: Foreman or Sup enters this number based on visual inspection of the hopper.
Total Length to Pave: Entered under target distance. (Feet.)
Already Paved: The distance the crew has paved on this shift in (Feet.)
Remaining: Calculation: Total Length to the Paver - Already Paved = Remaining. Apparent Thickness: Calculated thickness based on all data collected.
Average Load/Truck: Calculated average of all ticketed loads.
Material Needed to Finish: This is the tonnage needed to complete the job. Estimated Number of Loads: The number of loads to complete the job.
Completed Shifts
Completed Shifts will show Mainline Paving Calculator results on the KPI screen.
The Mainline Paving Calculator pop-up for completed shifts shows the yield results.
NOTE: The Material To Finish pop-up only applies to active shifts.
Executive/Real-time Scoreboards
Finally, the Executive and Real-time Scoreboards have also been updated to return the new Mainline Paving Calculator KPIs.
Add/Edit Equipment List: Hopper Size
Hopper. The hopper is used as a temporary storage area for HMA delivered by the transport vehicle.
Add/Edit Equipment (This applies if not set on MMS Controls):
Mainline Paving Calculator uses the Equipment Type and Manufacturer Model to determine if the destination is indeed a paver. If the Equipment Type assigned to the paver doesn’t include Paver and the Model is TBD, the shift will not provide Mainline Paving Calculator data. Make sure the paver equipment’s type and model are set correctly.
Equipment Type: Requires the name Paver as the equipment type. If the customer does not have a Paver option, navigate to Add/Edit Custom Equipment Types and correct or add Paver.
Hopper Size - Pavers Only (ft3): [Enter the paver’s hopper capacity in feet cubed.]
MMS Controls:
Mainline Paving Calculator Settings on the MMS Controls page.
Mainline Paving Calculator Global Settings: Enable MPC or Disable MPC (for all shifts in the MMS Controls settings)
Mainline Paving Calculator Shift Default: Enable or Disable.
Default Width: This refers to the paver width. 12 foot, 10 foot, or 8 foot pavers
Default Weight: Weight of the asphalt per square yard.
Calculation: 1 square yard of hot-mix, 1” thick should weight 110 lbs after compaction. Jobs are planned based on width, depth, and length. Therefore, if, for example, the plan is to pave 1 mile of road (5280 feet) 12 feet wide and 2” deep, then a “perfect” execution would use 774.4 tons of asphalt

Add/Edit Shifts will populate defaults from the MMS Controls. The numbers entered here will carry forward like all other KPI's

Mobile/Field App
Once the Mainline Paving Calculator default settings are entered on the website, the following settings may be completed and accessed from the Mobile/Field App for each paving shift.
The shift instance may be edited to enter the Mainline Paving Calculator targets below:
Target Depth/Thickness (in): [Mat thickness/depth in inches.]
Target Paving Distance: [Paving distance in feet for the shift. Example: Enter 100 if expecting to pave 100 feet during the shift instance.]
Yield Asphalt Weight (lb): [Enter the asphalt weight (per square yard inch) in pounds for the shift.]
Yield Paving Width (ft): [Paving width in feet for the shift.]
Hopper % Full: [Paver hopper percentage loaded for the shift. This should be entered as a decimal value (0.75 = 75%). For example, if paver holds 20 tons but the loads are 15 tons each, 0.75 should be entered.]
Once all the fields above have valid values, paving shifts will include a Mainline Paving Calculator menu option that when opened will report the Mainline Paving Calculator KPI’s (see pic below). At the bottom, it also reports if the shift is on pace or not, and when the target length should be achieved. The current yield trend is also reported.
Note: The KPI background colors (yellow, green, and red) will display the same as wed.
