Key Performance Indicators: KPIs:
Tons per Hour (TpH) – Crew: Measures the (average) number of tons dumped per hour for all trucks from Shift Start to the current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Tons per Hour (TpH) – Truck: Measures the (average) number of tons dumped per hour from first load to latest dump (Active Shift) OR last dump (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Last Hour: Last Hour measures the tonnage dumped within the last 60 minutes (current time - 60 minutes). For example, if the current time: 4:04 PM and dumps have occurred at 8:32 AM, 9:13 AM, 10:23 AM, 2:58 PM, 3:24 PM, 3:48 PM, and 4:03 PM, the Last Hour will include the tonnage total for the three dumps occurring between 3:04 PM and 4:04 PM.
Note: This is different from the Tons per Hour (TpH) – Crew and Tons per Hour (TpH) – Truck KPIs which measure the average tonnage per hour as of the shift start time until the current time. See above.
Feet per Minute (FpM): Measures the distance traveled per minute by the paver (Destination) designated on the shift.
This KPI provides an Explain This button on the Shift Card that provides details about how the actual FpM for the specific shift was calculated.
This control is available from the Executive Scoreboard and the Real-Time Scoreboard when clicking on a specific shift to open the Shift Card.
A Set FpM Target button is provided on the Shift Card if the FpM Target was not previously set for the shift. Simply click, enter a target for the KPI, and click the checkmark.
This control is available on the Real-Time Scoreboard when clicking on a specific shift to open the Shift Card. KPI targets can’t be set for completed (past) shifts.
Note: When the paver is not moving (0 mph) or repositioning, the Paver is assumed to not be paving. Pavers are considered repositioning when moving at speeds above a normal paving speed. This is either the default 100 FpM or the FpM Non-Paving Threshold setting (see Add/Edit Equipment) for the Paver.
Cycle [Time]: The average cycle time (load to load), in decimal minutes, across all trucks, Scale Ticket to Scale Ticket. The final cycle of the day, where there is not a subsequent Scale Ticket, is calculated from the last Scale Ticket to the recorded Dump Time +/- the Clockout Offset (See MDS Controls). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
If a truck works more than a single shift during the day or night (i.e. they receive a scale ticket for a different job or simply visit a different source or destination), the truck’s cycle time is calculated by adding a partial cycle to the shift left for another job (considering current Clock-In and Clock-Out settings). Cycle time doesn't consider source or destination, just that an assigned scale ticket matches a shift.
At Source Time: The average of all the time, in decimal minutes, Trucks spent waiting at the Source before being loaded. The Target is set in MDS Controls and applies to all Shifts.
At Dest Time: The average of all the time, in decimal minutes, Trucks spent waiting at the Destination before dumping the load. The Target is set in MDS Controls and applies to all Shifts.
Trucking Cost per Ton (TCpT): Measures your total trucking cost against the total tonnage put down from Shift Start to current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Construction Material Management Shifts (CMMS) Shift KPIs:
CMMS shifts measure the material moved from a defined Source to an undefined destination (Not a Source or N/S). For example, moving dirt from an excavator to other locations within the project. Material can be measured in tons (weight) and/or yards (volume), and KPIs may be set to measure performance. Shifts must be set up (defined) with a Shift Cycle Type of CMS Shift on the Add/Edit Shifts page or on the Update a Shift pop-up.
Tonnage and yardage per load is calculated using the values entered into the Custom Equipment Type Default Load UST/MT (US Tons / Metric Tons) and Custom Equipment Type Default Volume CYD (Cubic Yards) fields. To also measure material in yards and see the yardage KPIs noted below, check the Yards box for the shift.
Tons per Hour (TpH) – Crew: Like MMS Shifts, this measures the (average) number of tons per hour for all trucks from Shift Start to the current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift. .
Tons per Hour (TpH) – Truck: Like MMS Shifts, this measures the (average) number of tons dumped per hour from first load to latest dump (Active Shift) OR last dump (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Ton Truck Hour: This is the average tons per hour for all trucks working the shift. The target for this KPI is not set directly. It is based on the total tonnage (based on cycle count) for a truck, divided by trucking hours (active cycles time), divided by truck count.
Trucking Cost per Ton (TCpTon): Measures your total trucking cost against the total tonnage from Shift Start to current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
(Truck tonnage rate multiplied by truck hours) divided by truck tons = Individual Truck TCpT
Sum all Individual Truck TCpT values and divide by truck count.
Yards per Hour (YpH) – Crew: Measures the (average) number of yards dumped per hour from Shift Start to the current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Yards per Hour (YpH) – Truck: Measures the (average) number of cubic yards dumped per hour from first load to latest dump (Active Shift) OR last dump (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Yard Truck Hour: This is the average yards per hour for all trucks working the shift. The target for this KPI is not set directly. It is based on the total yardage (based on cycle count) for a truck, divided by trucking hours (active cycles time), divided by truck count.
Trucking Cost per Yard (TCpYard): Measures your total trucking cost against the total yardage from Shift Start to current time (Active Shift) OR Shift End (Completed Shift). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
(Truck yardage rate multiplied by truck hours) divided by truck yards = Individual Truck TCpY
Sum all Individual Truck TCpY values and divide by truck count.
CMS Shift Card KPIs:
Mainline Paving Calculator (MPC):
Important Notes: The Mainline Paving Calculator (MPC) is intended for mainline paving jobs only, and only returns data if a paver is set as the Destination for the shift and the loads are scale ticketed. In addition, yield calculations are not returned for the shift until at least five material dumps at the paver have occurred.
MPC Shift KPIs:
Depth (in.): How thick the mat is being laid compared to the Depth target set for the shift.
Paving Distance (ft.): The calculated distance paved for the shift compared to the Distance target set for the shift.
Paving Square Yards: The calculated square yards paved for the shift. The target for this is calculated using the shift’s Width (ft.) setting and the target set for Paving Distance (ft.). KPI percentages will not be returned for this KPI until a Paving Distance (ft.) target is set.
MPC KPI Color Coding:
Green: 95.1% to 104.9%
Yellow: Below between 95%-90.1% & above between 105%-109.9%
Red: Below 90% or above 110%
The Mainline Paving Calculator button on active Shift Cards will present the following data (right). The elements at the top are MPC shift settings and KPI targets. The bar graphs show the shift yield progress so far and the elements below are the calculated yield data for the shift. The bottom section presents the trend through the end of the shift at the current yield.
The Material to Finish button on active shift cards will present the estimated amount of material and number of loads to complete the shift at the current yield trend.
The Hopper % Full value may be adjusted to more accurately reflect the material currently in the paver’s hopper. This allows the foreman to cancel future loads or inform the plant that more loads will be needed depending on the trend.
Important Note: Scale Ticket Integration is required for all the KPI’s above to work as documented.
Other indicators of Shift information:
Shift Compass: Indicates the total trucks on the shift (middle number) and what stage each truck is at (surrounding numbers). The left number (S:) represents trucks at the Source; the top number reflects those traveling from the Source to the Destination; the right number (D:) represents trucks at the Destination; and the bottom number reflects those traveling from the Destination to the Source. (The web and mobile versions are shown to the right.)
Load Count: Measures the total number of loads from Shift Start to Shift End (if completed or ended) or the Last Dump (if in progress), where a Load is one full cycle from Load to Dump. This includes both Tracked (connected devices/trucks) and Untracked (unconnected devices/trucks w/out devices) loads, but it does not include Unscaled loads (loads that don’t have a corresponding Scale Ticket).
Total Tons: Measures the total tonnage from Shift Start to Shift End (if completed or ended) or the Last Dump (if still in progress). This total includes tonnage amounts from both tracked and untracked loads, but it does not include the tonnage amount of unscaled loads.
The Trucks, Loads, and Tons are broken down into Tracked, Untracked, and Total amounts for each shift. In the same table (shown at right), the Unscaled trucks and load counts are included, but no tonnage is captured.
The Asterisk displayed next to the Unscaled Tons figure (see illustration above) indicates that the tonnage is assumed and summed using the Equipment Type tonnage capacity as entered in the Custom Equipment Type Default Load UST: field on the Add/Edit Custom Equipment Type screen.
Shift Percentage (%) Completed: Indicates the percentage completed (as of the current time during the shift) with a completion. As the shift continues, the bar fills in with blue to indicate the shift’s progress. Today’s Shifts only.
First Ticket: Shows a summary of details for the first Scale Ticket issued for the shift. The details include the Scale Asset Name (or Alias Name) of the Truck (Equipment), the time the Scale Ticket was issued, the tonnage amount for the load, and the material.
First Load: Indicates the time of the first load, which is equivalent to the time the first scale ticket was issued. The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
First Dump: Indicates the time of the first dump, which is equivalent to the earliest time a truck leaves the destination (inner-radius when a paver is set as the destination). The target for this KPI is set on the Shift.
Note: For customers that are not Scale Integrated, the First Dump is inferred based on the midpoint between loads and may not always accurately reflect the actual first dump.
KPI Color Coding: Many of the KPIs above are color-coded red, yellow or green based on whether the KPI Target is being met. Red means the KPI value (Actual) is within 95% of meeting the Target, yellow means the KPI value is between 95% of meeting and 105% of exceeding the Target, and green means the KPI value is more than 105% of exceeding the Target. Note: Some KPI’s are color-coded based on exceeding a Target (TpH for example) and others are color-coded based on not exceeding a Target (TCpT for example).
Real-Time Scoreboard
The Real-Time Scoreboard reports the same KPI’s as those listed above for the Shift.
Executive Scoreboard
The Executive Scoreboard only applies to completed shifts. Other than always applying to completed shifts, many of the KPI’s on the Executive Scoreboard are explained above. Only unique KPI’s or those with slightly different names are listed here.
Project Cumulative Tons: This tracks Scale Ticket total tonnage across all Shifts for the Project. This KPI Target is entered in the Target Tons field on the Project (See View/Edit Project).
Shift Tons: Other than always applying to completed shifts on the Executive Scoreboard, this KPI is the same as Total Tons above.
Target Tons: The total tonnage target set for the Shift (start to finish).
At Source Avg: Other than always applying to completed shifts on the Executive Scoreboard, this KPI is the same as At Source Time above.
At Dest Avg: Other than always applying to completed shifts on the Executive Scoreboard, this KPI is the same as At Dest Time above.
TCpT Report KPIs
The TCpT Report only applies to completed shifts. . Other than always applying to completed shifts, many of the KPI’s on the TCpT Report are explained above. Only unique KPI’s or those with slightly different names are listed here.
Source/Destination Cycles: The total number of times all the trucks went between the Source and the Destination.
Hours: The total number of hours for all trucks working the shift.
Loads: Total number of loads for all trucks. Includes Untracked and FW Unknown Loads.
Total Known Cost: The total Run Cost for all trucks working the shift.
Loads per Hour: This is calculated by dividing the Loads by the Hours.
Number of Trucks: Total number of trucks. Note: Includes any Untracked and FW Unknown (no device installed) trucks that worked the shift.
Average Tons: The average number of tons per load.
Shift Length: The duration or length of the shift in decimal hours.
Average Cycle (minutes): The average cycle time in decimal minutes.
Individual Truck Data: Does not include FW Unknown (no device installed) trucks.
Run Cost per Truck: The cost of the individual truck for the shift. (Equipment Type Hourly Rate × Hours or Equipment Type per Ton Rate × Tons).
TCpT per Truck: The TCpT (Trucking Cost per Ton) for the individual truck (Run Cost ÷ Total Tons).
KPI FAQs
How Does Changing a Shift Impact KPIs?
The following KPIs are impacted by ending a shift early (or adjusting the Shift End Time):
TpH-Crew is calculated from the Start of the Shift to the End of the Shift, so changing the End Time will impact this KPI.
Total Tons is from Shift Start to Shift End when the Shift is completed, so changing the End Time will impact this KPI.
Shift Percentage (%) Completed indicates the completion of the shift, so ending the shift will cause the blue bar to be filled completely and show a fully completed (100%) shift.
Other KPIs are not affected by the ending of a shift because these KPIs are based on the Last Dump (TpH-Truck, Cycle [Time], and TCpT) or last exit from the Paver (FpM).
Note: In situations where the Dump Event can’t be calculated, we estimate those dump events by splitting the difference. If one of these estimated dumps was the last Dump Event of the day, it would be an assumption and would be affected by changing the Shift End Time or using End Shift to end it prematurely. KPIs that may be indirectly affected by this include TpH-Truck, FpM, Cycle [Time], and TCpT.
Adjusting Geozones Note:
Changing a geozone, such as a destination or a Paver radius impacts KPI calculations. For example, a smaller or larger geozone or radius will change when a truck enters and exits the geozone or radius and impacts the total time spent within. A Shift reprocess is required to update related KPI’s when a geozone or paver radius is adjusted.
How are Dump Events Calculated?
FleetWatcher’s MDS dump events have two requirements: scales integration (for load information) and a shift set up with both a source AND a destination. The dump events are generated by the second-to-last transmission from within the destination geozone. For example, if a shift is set from Plant (Source) to Paver (Destination), KPIs will calculate the dump events based on the Truck’s exit from the inner geozone radius of the paver. For the greatest accuracy, we recommend that the destination of the Shift is set as the paver.
Note: Dump times are estimated (in real time), the truck going into, back out, and then back into the Destination geozone (or paver radius) can cause a dump line to re-generate or move on the LCA. Nightly processes run to re-calculate dump events after shifts end to improve the dump time accuracy from the previous estimated times used in real-time.
Rolling Feet per Minute and Rolling Tons per Hour Report Differences?
Reports KPIs and Benchmarking Rolling Feet per Minute and Rolling Tons per Hour Reports takes every currently running shift with equipment as a destination and runs the distance in feet between every regular GPS ping on those Pavers. This is based on Raw GPS coordinates and there is no accounting for stopping. These KPI’s also don’t consider Scale Ticket data.
The Rolling Feet per Minute (RFpM) and Rolling Tons per Hour (RTpH) reports are much simpler than the Scale Ticket based shift KPIs seen on the Shift Card. These were designed to provide KPI’s to Non-Scale Integrated customers. The RFpM Report only considers a brief time period and defaults to the last 30 minutes, although it may be run for longer periods. Note: If a customer has active Scale Integration(s), the Shift KPI’s should be used instead of these reports.
IMPORTANT: The reports in Reports>>KPIs and Benchmarking>> DO NOT consider Scale Tickets, whether the customer is Scale Integrated or not, and ONLY considers the last x minutes (as entered when reports are run). As such, it takes every currently running Shift with a piece of Equipment (Paver/Miller) as a Destination, and runs the distance in feet between every regular GPS ping from the Destination Equipment. It is simply based on raw GPS coordinates and does not account for Paver repositioning or stops.
Glossary
Density: Density is a reference to a material’s weight at a certain volume. A certain asphalt density is attained with a mechanical compaction of the hot material after paving equipment places it.
FpM: Feet per Minute (Metric: MpM, Meter per Minute)
KPI: Key Performance Indicator
Mainline: Mainline paving jobs (shifts) are those where paving runs in one direction on a freeway or road with no abrupt changes in direction. Even freeway on/off ramps can throw off MPC calculations because of the paver movements inherent in paving such interchanges.
Mat: This term is used to describe a new asphalt surface positioned behind the paving machine. It refers to asphalt during the laydown and compaction processes.

Yield: Yield in the paving industry refers to how much “Mat” is laid to cover the road/ground surface. A given length and width of road can be paved with more or less asphalt based on how thick the asphalt is laid.
