Introduction
The Mainline Paving Calculator tracks how accurately your paving crew is laying material based on width, depth, weight, and distance. It’s built for mainline paving shifts where a paver is set as the Destination, and helps ensure the mat is laid within spec. The Mainline Paving Calculator updates in real time after five scaled loads are dumped.
Navigation
To access the Mainline Paving Calculator:
Today’s Shifts – Shift cards with a paver as Destination
Completed Shifts – Final yield results
Executive and Real-Time Scoreboards – For active and past shifts
Add/Edit Shift and Update a Shift – To set or edit Mainline Paving Calculator targets
Use This Tool To:
Monitor if you’re laying too much or too little material
Compare yield trends against target plans
Estimate how many more tons or loads are needed
Make live adjustments to meet job specs
Requirements
The Destination must be a Paver with the correct Equipment Type and Model
Scale integration is required for yield accuracy
Mainline Paving Calculator must be enabled globally or per shift (see MMS Controls)
Minimum of 5 scaled loads must be dumped before data appears
Set Mainline Paving Calculator Shift Settings (Paving Shifts Only) defaults in MMS Controls; override per shift in Add/Edit Shift or Update a Shift.
Key Yield Metrics Tracked
Metric | Description |
Depth (in.) | Actual vs. target compacted thickness |
Paving Distance (ft.) | Total feet paved, GPS-based |
Paving Square Yards | Width × distance = area paved |
Tons Used | Based on scale tickets or load estimates |
Yield (%) | Actual yield vs. planned based on depth, width, distance, and tons used |
Setting Targets (Shift-Level or Defaults)
Field | Example Value |
Weight (lb./sy-in) | 110 |
Paving Width (ft.) | 12 |
Depth (in.) | 2.0 |
Target Distance (ft.) | 10,000 |
Hopper Avg. Full % | 75% |
Hopper Capacity (ft³) | Set per equipment model |
Color Coding
Color | Range |
🟢 Green | 95.1% – 104.9% |
🟡 Yellow | 90.1% – 95% or 105% – 109.9% |
🔴 Red | <90% or >110% |
Material to Finish Tool
Located in the Mainline Paving Calculator popup on active shifts:
Estimate how much material remains to finish the shift
Adjust the Hopper % Full slider to see more accurate results
Forecast remaining loads and tons needed
Optionally set an end time to see how far you can pave at current FpM
Real-World Calculation Examples
A 12' wide road, paved 2" deep, needs ~774 tons per mile
One 15-ton truckload should cover ~102 feet
If a 15-ton load only paves 80 feet, it’s being laid too thick
If it covers 120 feet, it may be too thin
FleetWatcher automates this math to show yield deviations in real time
Notes
Mainline Paving Calculator does not activate until five dumps have occurred
Yield metrics update live but require scale ticket data
Yield results for Completed Shifts appear on the KPI screen
Material to Finish is available only on active shifts
