Overview

This article provides step-by-step installation instructions for the GS-450 plug-and-play tracking device. Follow all steps in order to ensure a secure connection, successful activation, and accurate data reporting.

Who this guide is for:

Installers, mechanics, or administrators responsible for setting up GS-450 OBD-II devices in on-road trucks or support vehicles.

Required Tools and Hardware

Before beginning, verify that you have the following:

  • Zip ties

  • Electrical tape

  • Adjustable pliers or flathead screwdriver

  • GS-450 device

  • Y-harness (included with shipment)

Tip: Always ensure the vehicle is safely parked and powered off before starting installation.

Step-by-Step Installation

1 Preparation

Before beginning the installation:

  • Confirm all required tools and materials are present.

  • Ensure the vehicle is safely parked, powered off, and stable.

2 Locate the OBDII Port

  • Locate the vehicle’s OBDII diagnostic port.

  • This is typically found beneath the dashboard, near the steering column or driver’s footwell area.

3 Remove the OEM OBDII Port

  • The OEM port is usually clipped into a mounting bracket.

  • Use adjustable pliers or a flathead screwdriver to gently press down on the retaining clips.

  • Carefully remove the OEM port from its mount without damaging the connector or surrounding components.

4 Install the Y-Harness

  • Insert one side of the Y-harness into the original bracket location where the OEM port was mounted.

  • Connect the other side of the Y-harness to the OEM OBDII port that was just removed.

  • This setup allows diagnostic tools to still access the system when needed.

5 Connect the GS-450 Device

  • Plug the GS-450 device into the open connector on the Y-harness.

  • (Optional but recommended) Secure the connection with electrical tape to prevent it from loosening due to vibration.

6 Initialize the Device

  • Once connected, allow 5–10 minutes for the device to power up, check for software updates, and establish communication with the ECM.

  • During this time, indicator lights may flash as the device initializes.

7 Verify Operation

  • Start the truck and open the mobile app.

  • Use the Verify GPS Device feature to confirm the GS-450 is transmitting data correctly.

  • In the app, verify the reception of engine running packets (typically every minute).

  • Let the engine run for 10–15 minutes to ensure consistent communication and stable data reporting.

  • Turn off the engine and verify that an engine stopped packet is received.

  • (See the Verify GPS Device article for full step-by-step instructions.)

8 Mount the Device

  • Once verified, route the device and harness securely inside the dash area.

  • Mount the GS-450 as high as possible — preferably near the windshield — for strong GPS and cellular reception.

  • Use zip ties to fasten the device and secure excess harness away from sharp edges or moving parts.

9 Final Verification and Coupling

  • Start the vehicle again to perform a final operational check.

  • Confirm that the lights on the GS-450 indicate proper connectivity and that all data points (engine status, GPS, cellular) are reporting correctly.

  • Once connectivity is confirmed, open the mobile app and couple the device to the correct equipment:

    • From the home screen, tap Devices > Field Service Ticket.

    • Enter the required information, including:

      • Hour meter reading

      • Odometer reading (if applicable)

    • (See the Field Service Ticket article for detailed steps.)

  • Verify that the equipment information entered in the app matches your database record.

  • Once complete, the GS-450 is fully installed, verified, and ready for service.
