Virtual Device Integration Troubleshooting

Samsara, Motive, or Lytx virtual devices.

Updated over 6 months ago

Introduction

This guide covers common issues when integrating virtual devices like Samsara, Motive, or Lytx, along with troubleshooting steps. If issues persist, contact FleetWatcher support.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting Steps

1. Missing or Incomplete Data

Issue: Asset data on the LCA is missing or inconsistent.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Check if the data is correct in the virtual device portal (e.g., Samsara, Motive, Lytx).

    • If missing: Contact your vendor’s support.

    • If correct: Determine if the issue affects the entire fleet or a single asset.

      • Fleet-wide issue? Contact FleetWatcher support.

      • Single asset issue? Physically inspect the camera/GPS device for proper functionality.

2. Incorrect Asset Location

Issue: Assets are tracking at the wrong location.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Verify location data in the virtual device portal.

    • If incorrect: Contact your vendor’s support.

    • If correct: Ensure the correct electronic serial number (ESN) is assigned to the correct asset in FleetWatcher. A mismatch may cause data errors.

3. Missing Engine On/Off Signals

Issue: Assets appear to be running 24/7 or display extended data before shift starts.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Check data in the virtual device portal.

    • If incorrect: Contact your vendor’s support.

    • If correct:

      • Fleet-wide issue? Contact FleetWatcher support.

      • Single asset issue? Inspect the camera/GPS device for proper installation.

Note: Some virtual devices send a daily “heartbeat” check-in. If no other activity is detected, LCA logic may interpret this as continuous asset operation.

4. Inaccurate asset engine hours/odometer - MOTIVE

Issue: Motive integrated assets are showing incorrect engine hours/odometer readings in FleetWatcher compared to the asset’s dashboard or ECM (engine control module).

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Verify that vehicle hours/odometer are accurate in the Motive system.

    • If incorrect: Use the Motive system to adjust or add an hour meter/odometer offset. Correcting this should send over accurate readings in FleetWatcher.

    • If correct:

      • Contact FleetWatcher support.

Note: Currently identified as only a Motive issue/solution.
