Add a CMS Shift (Web)

Create and activate a CMS shift to track material moved from a single source without a defined destination.

Introduction

CMS (Construction Material Solution) shifts are used to track material moved within a jobsite, typically from a piece of equipment like an excavator to undefined or changing destinations.

These shifts are ideal when the destination is not fixed or not a geozone — such as moving dirt, stone, or fill material inside a project area.

Navigation

To access this feature:

Go to: MMS > Shifts > Add/Edit Shifts

Step-by-step Instructions

1. Info

  1. Enter a Job Name that describes the work

  2. Confirm or select the Company (defaults to parent company)

2. Where

  1. Select the Source Geo-zone — this will be the piece of equipment loading material, such as an excavator
    – When equipment is selected as the source, the Source Geo-zone Outer Radius (Feet) is required
    – This defines a temporary zone around the equipment for tracking during the shift

  2. Leave the Destination Geo-zone blank
    – CMS shifts are designed to function without a defined destination

  3. Select the Project linked to this job
    – Required for reporting and shift tracking

Need help creating equipment or geo-zones? See: Shift Prerequisites

3. When

  1. Choose a Single Day or Date Range

  2. Set the Start and End Times for Day and/or Night period

  3. Check the box for Use Day Period or Use Night Period to display the shift on Scheduled Shifts

4. What

  1. Set the Shift Cycle Type to CMS Shift

  2. (Optional) Check the box to Automatically Activate All Shifts in the selected date range

– CMS shifts are used when there’s only a source and the destination is undefined or changes throughout the job

– Equipment must be set to On-Road to appear on the LCA graph

📊 KPI Targets: Track by Cubic Yards

CMS shifts can be tracked in tons, cubic yards, or both. If you’re hauling material by volume, use the “Use volume (cubic yards)” checkbox to enable yardage-based KPIs.

How to Enable Cubic Yard KPIs

  1. Scroll to the KPI Targets section near the bottom of the Add/Edit Shifts page

  2. Check the box for Use volume (cubic yards) measurements

    • Optional: Uncheck Use weight (tons) measurements if you only want to track by yards

  3. Enter your volume-based targets:

Field

Description

Estimated Cubic Yards

Total yards expected to be moved during the shift

Cubic Yards per Hour (Crew)

Total shift productivity goal for all trucks combined

Cubic Yards per Hour (Truck)

Average production per truck

Trucking Cost per Cubic Yard

Used for cost-efficiency KPIs

🔁 Targets set here apply only to the first activated shift. Later shifts reuse values from the most recent one.

💬 Common Question:

“How do I change a CMS shift to track in cubic yards instead of tons?”

To update an existing shift to use cubic yards:

  1. Go to: MMS > Shifts > Today’s Shifts

  2. Click the (edit) link next to the Project name

  3. Confirm the Shift Cycle Type is set to CMS Shift

  4. Scroll to the KPI Targets section

  5. Check the box for Use volume (cubic yards) measurements

  6. (Optional) Uncheck the Tons box if you only want to track by yards

✅ This change applies to that specific shift and updates how KPIs are calculated and displayed.

🖼️ Example: KPI Setup with Cubic Yards Enabled

In this example, the shift is set to track by cubic yards, with the Use volume box checked and crew/truck productivity targets entered.

Activate the Shift

Once all required fields are entered, scroll to the bottom and choose one:

  • Activate Shift – Activates the first shift immediately

  • Save and Activate Later – Save details to schedule later
