Camera Events

View, filter, and manage all recorded safety events with video or snapshot captures from your fleet's camera system.

Overview

The Camera Events page shows a list of every safety event your camera system has recorded, such as harsh braking, distraction, or an impact. Each event includes details like the event type, date, whether it was captured as a photo or video, the driver, and the vehicle involved.

Camera Events

The Camera Events page displays a list of all recorded safety events detected by your camera system. Each event includes details such as Event Type, Date, Event Capture (Snapshot or Video), Driver, Equipment Number, and Equipment Type.

Reviewing Videos and Snapshots

To review a video or snapshot, click on an event from the Camera Events list. This opens the Videos & Snapshots window. Press the play button to watch both the forward-facing and driver-facing camera views at the same time.

Tap the X in the top left corner to close the window when finished. At the top right of the screen, you’ll see a download icon that allows you to save the video or snapshot to your device.

Status: Managing and reviewing video footage is essential for fleet safety, driver coaching, and compliance. To streamline this process, the Videos & Snapshots page includes an Annotation Status toolkit. Omit, Flag Events, and Reviewed. This allows fleet managers and safety coordinators to quickly categorize, review, and act on captured video events. (See Blow for Details)

Incident Note: Incident Note tool lets you document critical context directly on the event

At the bottom of the page, use the Back and Next buttons to cycle through each camera view. Starting with the driver-facing view, followed by the outward-facing camera.

To access additional options for the video:

  1. Locate the three dots in the bottom right corner of the first video.

  2. Click the dots to open a menu with the following actions:

    • Download

    • Playback Speed: Adjust the speed to 0.5x, 0.75x, Normal (Default), 1.25x, or 1.5x.

    • Picture in Picture: Open the recorded event in a new, separate playback window.

Filters and Settings

At the top of the page, use the search bar to locate a specific event. The left and right arrows beside the month and year allow you to navigate between months.

At the top of the page, use the search bar to locate a specific event. The left and right arrows beside the month and year allow you to navigate between months. A Total Events graph above the list shows how many events were recorded over the selected time period, so you can spot spikes at a glance.

Accessing Settings & Filters

To manage your view, click the Filter (upside-down triangle) icon located in the top-right corner. This opens the filters and settings panel where you can toggle equipment visibility. Once you apply filters, each active filter appears as a small “chip” near the top of the page. Click the X on a chip to clear that one filter, or use Clear All to remove every filter at once.

Selecting Monthly from the Settings dropdown determines the time period shown in the event list. Choose Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, or Custom dates.

You can also use the Filters panel to narrow your results by Event Type, Equipment, Equipment Type, Driver, or Annotation Status.

Note: Event Type List: Camera Obstructed, Distraction, Fatigue, Forward Collision Warning, Harsh Braking, Harsh Cornering, Impact, Lane Departure, Manual Event, Phone Use,Rapid Acceleration, Rolling Stop, Speed Camera Violation, Speed Sign Violation, Stop & Go, Tailgating, and Unfastened Seatbelt.

Annotation Status:

What is Annotation Status?

When viewing any event on the Camera Event Details page, you can apply three key annotation statuses—Reviewed, Flagged, and Omitted—as well as add internal Incident Notes.

These statuses update seamlessly across both Camera Events and Driver Safety reports, keeping your team aligned on incident reviews and driver evaluations.

Key Statuses & How to Use Them

1. Reviewed

  • What it does: Marks that a manager, dispatcher, or safety coordinator has inspected the event and video footage.

  • Why use it:

    • Queue Management: High-volume fleets can easily separate pending events from those that have already been evaluated.

    • Team Coordination: Prevents multiple team members from duplicating review efforts on the same incident.

2. Flagged (Flag Event)

  • What it does: Tags an event for special attention, coaching, or management escalation.

  • Why use it:

    • Driver Coaching: Pinpoint high-risk driving behaviors (such as severe harsh braking, tailgating, or mobile phone distraction) to review during 1-on-1 driver safety sessions.

    • Incident Escalation: Highlight near-misses, critical road incidents, or potential collisions that need further investigation by upper management or safety directors.

3. Omitted (Omit)

  • What it does: Excludes an event from standard safety scoring and moves it into the Driver Safety Omissions Report.

  • Why use it:

    • False Positive Management: If an event was falsely triggered (e.g., severe road vibration from construction, rough terrain, or a parked vehicle triggered by nearby activity), you can omit it.

    • Score & Metric Accuracy: Ensures non-actionable or erroneous events do not unfairly penalize a driver’s safety score or distort company-wide safety analytics.

Incident Notes

Alongside status toggles, the Incident Note tool lets you document critical context directly on the event:

  • Record Findings: Document root causes or driver conversations (e.g., "Reviewed on 9/14: Driver swerved to avoid road debris").

  • Cross-Report Visibility: Saved notes are visible directly on the event details and automatically surface in the Notes section of the Driver Safety reporting views.

Streamline Your Daily Workflow with Filters

On the Camera Events List page, use the Annotation Status filter dropdown to focus on what matters most:

  • Unreviewed Events: Filter for pending events each morning to ensure all daily video alerts are processed.

  • Flagged Events: Filter to generate an immediate list of coaching items for scheduled driver safety meetings.

  • Omitted Events: Quickly audit excluded events to ensure consistent policy application across your fleet.

Active Filter Tags:

When you apply one or more filters using any combination of the panel options (Event Type, Equipment, Equipment Type, or Driver), an active filter tag (pill) displays above the chart and results list for each applied option. Each tag clearly displays the category and selected value (e.g., Equipment Type: Belly Dump).

  • Remove a Single Filter: Click the X icon inside any individual tag to clear that specific filter.

  • Remove All Filters: Click CLEAR ALL next to the active tags (or RESET FILTERS in the side panel) to clear all applied filters at once.

Camera Recording and Storage FAQ

Q: How far back can I view video recordings if an event wasn't triggered?

A: You can access and view video recordings and snapshots for up to 180 days. While the system maintains a permanent record of media IDs in the database, the actual video files are stored on VisionMax servers for this six-month window.

Technical Details to Keep in Mind:

  • Continuous vs. Event Recording: The 180-day retention period applies to both event-triggered clips and general footage.

  • On-the-Fly Retrieval: When you view historical footage, the system pulls the media directly from the server via API in real-time.

  • Long-term Storage: If you need to retain specific footage for liability reasons (such as a car accident or legal documentation) beyond the 180-day window, you must download the video and store it locally on your own device or server.
