Camera Trips

Track and review fleet trips, mileage, and safety events. Filter by driver, vehicle, or date to monitor in-progress and completed trips

Overview

The Camera Trips page gives you an overview of every trip your fleet has recorded. Use this page to monitor driver activity, track vehicle mileage, and find trips that had a safety or operational event.

Think of this page as where you find the right trip and time. Once you've found what you're looking for, you can request the actual video from the Footage page.

Navigation

Go to: Cameras > Trips

From the top navigation menu, click Cameras, then on the left side click Trips.

Camera Trips:

Camera Trips lets you quickly find, review, and retrieve video clips recorded by your FleetWatcher cameras during vehicle trips. It’s designed for users who need to investigate trips, verify events (for example, harsh driving or incidents), or pull video for coaching and safety reviews.

Search Bar: Located at the top left, you can search for specific drivers or vehicles by name.

Month Selection: Located to the right of the Search Bar: use the left and right arrows to switch between months.

Total Trips Graph: Provides a visual monthly summary of all trips.

Each row in the table represents a single trip and includes:

  • Driver: The name of the operator assigned to the trip.

  • Trip Status: Indicates if a trip is In Progress (Green dot) or Complete (Grey dot).

  • Assigned Vehicle: The specific vehicle used for the journey.

  • Start/End: Precise timestamps for when the trip began and concluded.

  • Duration & Mileage: Total time on the road and distance covered.

  • Events: A count of specific triggers (such as safety alerts) recorded during the trip.

  • Device: The unique ID of the camera hardware.

Trip Card Details: InProgress

Trip Status: In Progress.

  • Drivers that are still in route will display “In Progress” under Trip Status.

  • Click “Live Feed” to quickly see what’s happening with the individual driver.

Note on In-Progress Trips: When viewing an In Progress trip card, the Retrieve Footage button is visible directly to the left of the Live Feed button. It is grayed out (disabled) because footage retrieval is only available for Completed trips. To view video for an active driver, select Live Feed.

Camera Live View.

Once you click Live Feed, the page directs to the Camera Live View where you can watch the live feed.

Click the X in the top right corner to return to the previous screen.

Trip Card Details: Completed

Clicking a trip opens the trip details page, including Retrieve Footage and Events.

Trip Status: Completed.

  • Trip cards without events will display a map view of the driver's route.

  • To access the video footage: Click the Retrieve Footage button found in the top left of the screen.

Trip Status: Completed.

  • Trip cards with events will display a map with each event displaying on the map in the location of the event.

  • A list of events are displayed on the right side of the screen under “Events.”

  • Click the word View to review the video footage of the event.

  • Click the icon on the map that represents the event, then click details to review the video footage.

What does the Retrieve Footage button do?

Retrieve Footage: Use this button to request camera footage for the selected trip.

When you click Retrieve Footage a new page opens that allows you to view trip details. FleetWatcher will process the request and create a video clip. Once complete, the clip will appear under Footage, where you can view and manage it.

Functionality of the Video Timeline Slider

The timeline slider beneath the map on the Retrieve Footage screen allows users to select, scrub, and define a specific time window from a vehicle's trip to request and retrieve recorded camera footage.

  • It visually synchronizes with the trip map to isolate the specific portion of the route/time you want to review.

  • Displays a live clip duration preview and mode indicator based on the span selected.

  • When submitted, it packages the request (calculating the window span and midpoint timestamp) to retrieve the video clip from the camera provider (Mitac).

What Triggers "Normal" vs. "Time Lapse"

Video retrieval mode is automatically determined by the duration of the selected time window:

  • Normal Mode (≤ 5 minutes):

    • Triggered whenever the selected range is 5 minutes or less.

    • Retrieves standard, uncompressed real-time video footage.

  • Time-Lapse Mode (> 5 minutes):

    • Automatically implied whenever the selected range is greater than 5 minutes (up to the maximum requestable window of 1 hour).

    • A mode marker chip appears in the UI with a hover tooltip indicating time-lapse mode and its multiplier.

Auto-Scaled Time-Lapse Compression Rates:

When in time-lapse mode, the compression multiplier scales dynamically based on the length of the selected window:

  • 5 – 10 minutes: 5x compression

  • 10 – 20 minutes: 10x compression

  • 20 – 40 minutes: 20x compression

  • > 40 minutes (up to 1 hour): 30x compression

How to Adjust the Timeline

  • Drag the Start/End Handles: Click and drag the bounding handles of the range slider under the map to expand, shrink, or reposition the selection window across the trip.

  • Window Limits: You can adjust the selection to any duration from a few seconds up to a maximum window of 1 hour (60 minutes).

  • Dynamic UI Updates: As you adjust the slider handles, the UI automatically updates:

    • The start, end, and total source span times.

    • The Normal / Time-Lapse mode chip and corresponding rate multiplier.

    • The estimated output clip duration preview.

Create Video:

1. Select the Camera view: Use the dropdown menu (bottom left corner) to select which camera view you would like to download.

2. Use the sliding timeline (below the map) to select the section of video you want to retrieve.

3. Click Create Video. A popup window will appear allowing you to change the file name.

4. Click Submit. A Retrieval Submitted popup will display.

5. Click Check Progress. This will open the Footage page. Under the Status Column you will see “Upcoming” for newly retrieved footage.

Behind the scenes, the system pulls the raw camera data for that period and starts creating a video clip. Once the clip is ready, it appears as created footage on the Camera Footage page.

Settings and Filtering

Use the right-hand sidebar to narrow down your results. After selecting your criteria, click the Apply button to refresh the list.

Settings

You can adjust the time frame of the data shown using the Settings dropdown. Options include:

  • Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly: Quick presets for standard reporting.

  • Custom: Select a specific date range to find historical data.

Filters:

Trip Status

Filter your view based on whether a vehicle is currently on the road:

  • In-Progress: Shows only vehicles currently moving.

  • Complete: Shows finished trips only.

Has Events

To quickly find trips that require a manager's review, use the Has Events filter:

  • Contained Events: Only displays trips where a specific event (like harsh braking or speeding) was triggered.

  • No Events: Displays "clean" trips with no recorded incidents.

Equipment and Driver

  • Equipment/Driver Dropdowns: Filter the list to a specific vehicle ID or a particular driver to audit their performance.

Pro Tip: If a trip is "In Progress," the End Time, Duration, and Mileage will remain blank until the vehicle has stopped and the trip is finalized.

Usability notes:

  • Filters update the trip/footage list immediately, so you can iterate quickly.

  • Filters can be combined (for example, “this vehicle + this date + trips with footage”) to get very precise results.

Retrieve Footage behavior:

  • All cameras removed from the request
If you deselect/remove all cameras when setting up a retrieval, the UI gives clear feedback and shows a snapshot-style preview instead of full footage.

  • Time zone discrepancies
If there’s a mismatch between the trip time zone and your account/local time, the retrieve flow highlights it so you can confirm you’re grabbing the correct time window:
